'Chinese Google' Baidu Planning Expansion of Generative AI and Metaverse

Chinese tech giant Baidu, also known as “Google of China,” has divulged its plan to expand the areas of generative AI and metaverse along with quantum computing. Robin Li, Baidu’s CEO, announced this during the company’s annual AI developer conference, “Baidu Create 2022,” which was held virtually in its own metaverse app.

Mr. Li explored Baidu’s research and analysis of future technology trends, covering a range of emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, intelligent search, quantum computing, and AI scientific computing during “Create 2022,” which was held virtually in its XiRang metaverse platform and co-hosted by people and robots for the first time.

Mr. Li, spoke about Baidu’s strategy for promoting growth that is both healthy and sustainable in his speech titled “Innovation Drives Growth, Feedback Drives Innovation”. “Deep learning algorithms have set the cornerstone for the fourth technological revolution,” Li explained. The role of feedback from the market, users, and customers in driving technology was also emphasized by Mr. Li.

“Technology innovation is not something you can create behind closed doors.” “Rather, innovation comes from listening and improving based on real-world user feedback,” said Mr. Li.

In 2022, Baidu emerged as the world’s largest robotaxi service provider, with 1.4 million rides completed by the end of September. Haifeng Wang, CTO of Baidu. explored the strong potential for driving generalized application.

AI-Generated Content Has Potential

At the “Create 2022” event, Baidu introduced several deep learning models for video content generation and editing, including the Big Model ERNIE 3.0 Zeus. “These models will be used to power AI-generated content,” Baidu claimed.

Baidu has already released Wenxin Yige, a text-to-image tool, in November last year. Wenxin Yige operates in the same way as Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, but it allows traditional Chinese in text.

AI-generated content has the potential to stimulate artistic creativity and empower individual creators, as per Hua Wu, chair of the Baidu Technology Committee.

UniBev, a new intelligent transportation solution, was also unveiled at “Create 2022.” UniBev is an integrated vehicle-road solution that offers multi-sensor and multi-tasking sensing capabilities and is designed to improve smart vehicles.

Own Metaverse Debut

Baidu made its debut with its own metaverse solution, -XiRang MetaStack. The company claims that using their platform, building a metaverse can be done in as little as 40 days, as opposed to the typical six to twelve months it would take with other solutions.

According to the press release, XiRang MetaStack provides “a completely out of the box development experience with 20 core AI capabilities covering speech, semantics, vision, audiovisual, blockchain and AIoT,” and can “increase the average R&D efficiency by 300% at half the operation and maintenance cost.”

Baidu also revealed QIAN, a long-term strategy for quantum computing development. The Chinese tech giant entered the quantum market in September and now seeks to bridge the gap between quantum technology and real-world applications.

It intends to enhance research as well as infrastructure building. The Chinese corporation intends to use quantum technology in “countless sectors.”

Baidu also demonstrated a software tool that uses AI to eliminate echoes during phone calls, which they claim will improve navigation by allowing for smoother and more intelligent interactions between humans and AI.
