Letter: Think of Barnier as European, not French

Why is Michel Barnier labelled a “Frenchman” in your report “Barnier hints at concession on ECJ role in trade accord” (July 3)? He’s an EU appointee, doing an EU job. Elsewhere another EU appointee, commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis, is not given a nationality (EU sues members over dirty-money failings). Being sufficiently European, I might take a guess at where he comes from, but I don’t want to.

Is being a Frenchman a sign that probably we shouldn’t trust what the EU’s Brexit negotiator was up to? We’re not reading the Daily Express, are we?
