The Security Industry Association (SIA) trends in enterprise security for 2024 have been revealed with artificial intelligence (AI). The survey gathered understanding from security industry leaders and experts, including those from the 2023 Securing New Ground (SNG) conference.
According to the SIA report, 93% of respondents feel the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) similar to ChatGPT on their business strategies will occur within the next five years. Furthermore, over 89% of participants revealed the existence of AI projects in their research and development (R&D) pipelines and the presence of AI adoption in the industry.
Trends shaping cybersecurity in 2024
In 2024, cybersecurity trends include a focus on getting more value from security investments (ROI), integration of security components, the rise of subscription-based security services (SaaS), adapting security for flexible workspaces, and addressing challenges in the convergence of IT and operational technology (IT-OT). These trends stress the need for security to deliver benefits, collaborate effectively, scale easily, adapt to changing work environments, and protect related systems.
AI’s role in cybersecurity
One of these trends involves integrating AI into cybersecurity practices, ushering in protection for data, intellectual property (IP), and corporate integrity. AI’s accessibility has grown and is now used for good and evil purposes.
Pankit Desai, co-founder and CEO of cybersecurity firm Sequretek, noted,
“AI-based attacks are much more efficient and difficult to spot. For example, a social engineering attack carried out with the help of AI technologies will have more convincing language, representation, and deepfakes.”
Three concerns emerge when discussing AI in security: trust in AI, ethical application of AI, and cybersecurity of AI. The industry must engage with these issues to ensure a responsible AI position.
AI-infused digital cameras
The adoption of AI-infused digital cameras is transforming into tools within the security industry. These cameras support AI to revolutionize video surveillance, evolving from mere sensors to intelligent systems.
The report highlights that IoT, once seen as a network of sensors, is now populated by cameras. In 2022 alone, 78 million security cameras were shipped worldwide.
Generative AI: A text-prompt revolution
Generative AI, specifically text-prompt-only AI, is emerging in the security sector. With access to public data, generative AI like ChatGPT will reshape the industry. This technology finds applications in content creation and addressing operational challenges.
The study indicates that nearly half of security solution developers anticipate the influence of generative AI on their strategies in the next five years. Moreover, 74% of these developers have an R&D resource for AI.
The need for AI regulation
Kumar Ritesh, founder and CEO of cybersecurity company Cyfirma, stated the importance of creating a regulatory framework for Generative AI. This framework must prioritize transparency, fairness, accountability, privacy, and standardization to ensure ethical, responsible, and secure AI development and deployment.
