Abu Dhabi Establishes a DLT Framework for Web3 and DAO Entities

Abu Dhabi has legalized decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), rolling out a comprehensive distributed ledger technology (DLT) framework.

This progressive step not only lays the groundwork for Web3 entities to flourish with legal clarity but also empowers them with the authority to issue tokens. According to experts, this is a significant move toward mainstream acceptance and integration of blockchain technology within the legal and financial spheres.

A new dawn for blockchain innovation in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s seat of innovation, has taken a decisive step toward the future of technology and finance by introducing a DLT framework designed explicitly for DAOs and other blockchain ventures. This framework is part of the emirate’s grand vision to become a nexus for cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, rivaling even its neighbour Dubai in its ambition.

Establishing such a regulatory infrastructure heralds a new era for digital ledger entities, offering them a legitimate platform to operate and increase within the region. The DLT Foundations Regime, born from extensive consultations with industry experts and stakeholders, aims to advance the sector by enhancing operational efficiency and transparency.

Abu Dhabiā€™s regulatory leap forward

Under the stewardship of the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), the emirate has manifested a proactive approach to embracing digital assets.

The ADGM’s pioneering regulations affirm Abu Dhabiā€™s commitment to creating an ecosystem conducive to technological advancements. Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of ADGM, has expressed confidence that this transformative step will entice innovators and reinforce Abu Dhabi’s reputation as a forward-thinking jurisdiction.

The impact of a regulated Web3 ecosystem

Abu Dhabi’s regulatory framework has the potential to shift the paradigm for digital assets, ensuring better governance and adherence to the decentralized ethos of the blockchain community. By creating a hospitable environment for these entities, Abu Dhabi stands at the forefront of international financial hubs, establishing benchmarks for others to follow.

Moreover, this regulatory certainty offers a sanctuary for digital asset companies navigating the often murky waters of international laws. Companies can now operate with the assurance that their ventures are supported by precise and reliable legal frameworks unique to the region.

Dubai joins the movement

Not to be outdone, Dubai is also actively fostering its crypto ecosystem. The Dubai Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority (VARA) has been on a licensing spree, with Backpack becoming the latest recipient of a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license. This milestone allows Backpack to launch its regulated crypto exchange service, indicating Dubai’s commitment to investor protection and transparency within the sector.

Setting the stage for global Web3 and AI integration

Additionally, in anticipation of the growing significance of AI and Web3 in the global economy, Dubai has unveiled the ‘Dubai AI and Web3 Campus’ and announced the inaugural ‘Dubai AI & Web3 Festival’. Slated for September 2024, this event declares Dubai’s intention to lead the charge in next-generation technology adoption, promising to draw a host of global players in innovation.

This festival, alongside Abu Dhabi’s regulatory strides, signals the UAE’s unified vision of becoming a global hotspot for technological breakthroughs, fostering a region ripe for investment and growth in the tech industry.

The integration of these efforts with the projected economic impact of AIā€”a staggering US$15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030ā€”and the rise of Web3 virtual assets illustrates the Middle East’s potential to become a crucible of tech-driven economic transformation. As more entities begin to trade within this regulated framework, the transaction value of virtual assets in decentralized infrastructures could skyrocket, cementing the region’s status as a nucleus of the digital future.
