AI Gaming CEO Says Technology Can Cause Explosion of Web3 Games

Ben James, the CEO of Atlas, says on The Agenda that generative AI might support the expansion of Web3 gaming and allow independent companies to make games on a tight budget.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the hottest narratives lately. In 2023, AI tokens saw an enormous price increase, while the overall crypto market mostly traded sideways.

Ben James, the CEO of Atlas, says on The Agenda that generative AI might support the expansion of Web3 gaming and allow independent companies to make games on a tight budget.

Generative AI is one of its most prominent use cases, and its technology creates images, video, text, music, etc. based on prompts imputed by the user. Since OpenAI’s DALL-E made generative AI popular in early 2021, it’s nearly impossible to go online without running into some form of AI-generated content, whether or not users know it.

Ben James, CEO of Atlas, joined presenters Jonathan DeYoung and Ray Salmond on Episode 30 of The Agenda podcast to talk about Web3 games, generative AI in gaming, the ongoing development of artificial intelligence, and other topics.

Speaking on The Agenda Podcast

James said that game developers have recognized that crypto and NFTs have a negative reputation and will not be worth emphasizing as marketing factors. According to him, many game developers developing web3 games have said they want to stop talking about web3 versus web2 gaming because they want the web3 element just to make a better game. He in addition said that they want a better experience for the gamer to come from their use of the new technology, whether blockchain or AI.

Generative AI can aid in the development of web3-powered games since it allows users to generate digital assets such as weapons and other in-game items that they can own more easily. James emphasized;

“User-generated content is a way to introduce creativity into the gameplay itself, which creates much more meaningful and interesting relationships for a player and the game they’re playing.”

Replying to DeYoung and Salmond, James stated that as an inexperienced content creator, they can create something that is truly their own and unique without knowing how to code or how to model assets. The web3 ethos, however, has permeated that and aligns very well with our vision for where we think this is going.

Although AI technology is great, there is a recurring argument that it will eventually replace humans in the workforce. When asked about this, James answered that it’s a transformative technology. He doesn’t think there’s any way around that.

In addition, the CEO said that in some jobs where somebody is doing repetitive, bland sort of structural work, that is a job that is probably at risk, and that sometime in the future, there will be an AI solution that can automate that process and do it infinitely faster than those humans could do.

Generative AI in Gaming

Major game companies concurrently outside of web3, like Square Enix, which supports Atlas, have started to adopt generative AI to boost productivity and game development speed.

James noted the possibility of projects benefiting from a huge increase in productivity of up to 200 times by using the technologies Atlas offers. He further added that the large game developer would understand this and how this would substantially improve the development process by chasing this high-end speed of development.

He in addition elaborated on how this level of efficiency improvement is critical, especially if scaling up to meet customer expectations becomes a challenge when the existing capacities reach their limit.
