Its been months since ChatGPT 3.5 and a little over a month since the update ChatGPT-4 was released but the tech space is already dominated by another new AI tool, Auto-GPT.
Auto-GPT is an open source project that seeks to make ChatGPT an autonomous tool according to Govind Choudhary. The AI tool, which was developed by Thoran Bruce Richards allows ChatGPT to prompt itself making it possible for the AI agents to complete tasks with no human intervention.

AI enthusiast Rowang Cheung wrote on his Twitter feed: “Thought ChatGPT was crazy? Everything is about to get even crazier with Auto-GPT. These AI agents operate automatically on their own and complete tasks for you.”
Auto-GPT comes as the latest AI tool among many other tools that have been released ever since OpenAI’s ChatGPT was made public in November. However, Auto-GPT is very different from many other tools produced, given that it has the ability to self-prompt, removing the need for a user to continuously provide directions for the task.
Features and installation
According to the GitHub repository for Auto-GPT has the following features:
- Internet access for searches and information gathering
- Long-Term and Short-Term memory management
- GPT-4 instances for text generation
- Access to popular websites and platforms
- File storage and summarization with GPT-3.5
In a 15 minute YouTube video, Matt Wolfe takes viewers through the process of installing Auto-GPT. To install the tool, one needs Git and Python on their device then download the application from its GitHub page.
This makes it a much better tool than ChatGPT given its access to the internet and having both GPT 3.5 and 4 models.
Why entrepreneurs like Auto-GPT
Many AI enthusiasts think of Auto-GPT as the first glimpse of AGI because it demonstrates the ability to reason and take multiple autonomous steps towards accomplishing goals.
Blogger, Matt describes Auto-GPT as a game changing AI tool especially for businesses, allowing them to optimize their operations but requires some technical knowledge to set up and use.
“As one of the first examples of GPT-4 running fully autonomously, Auto-GPT pushes the boundaries of what is possible with AI,” writes Matt.
For example, Auto GPT might suggest that you review your current product growth and processes to identify areas of improvement, create new ideas and increase productivity.
“Whether you are a small business owner or a large enterprise, Auto-GPT has the potential to transform the way you work and help you achieve your goals,” added Matt.
AI users have already started experimenting with Auto-GPT to automate their tasks and many have already taken to social media to share how good the tool is.
Twitter user Garret Scott posted about the app’s exploits praising it.
“Over the weekend I finished the to-do list that does itself. Every time you add a task, a GPT-4 agent is spawned to complete it. It already has the context it needs for you and your company and has access to your apps. It’s called the Do Anything Machine.”
Another comment on how Auto-GPT surpasses ChatGPT was made by Varun Mayya who shared how the bot was able to identify a missing package required for app development, and it searched on Google and installed the required node.js while he did nothing.
“Auto-GPT was trying to create an app for me, recognized I don’t have Node, googled how to install Node, found a stack overflow article with link, downloaded it, extracted it, and then spawned the server for me. My contribution? I watched.”
