As a result, tech companies around the world are either supporting such start-ups or developing their own products to compete with OpenAI’s brainchild, ChatGPT. The latest tech titan in the line-up to bring its own AI chatbot to market is Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, reported CNBC.

Microsoft is backing ChatGPT, Chinese search engine Baidu is also working to launch its own, Google also announced its AI chatbot called bard, and a few others have already launched.

According to a company spokesperson cited by CNBC, the company is working on ChatGPT-style technology, which is currently being tested internally. After such news spread over the internet, Alibaba shares jumped 3% in pre-market trade in the US.

Alibaba did not give a timeline or any hint about the name, even though the company has been working on generative AI since 2017.

To be integrated into several products

Alibaba, China’s biggest e-commerce company, hinted that its chatbot could be integrated into two products.

“As a technology leader, we will continue to invest in turning cutting-edge innovations into value-added applications for our customers as well as their end-users through cloud services,” said an Alibaba spokesperson.

NetEase, one of the largest Chinese gaming firms, said its education subsidiary, Youdao, has been working on generative AI. The company is planning to use large language models in some of its education production, said a spokesperson. NetEase did not give any hints about the product, but the company is keen to launch its new product very soon.

Baidu to finish testing

Baidu, Known as Chinese Google also hastening to launch ChatGPT-style project called “Ernie Bot” in March, Reuters reported.

Robin Li, Baidu’s CEO, announced this project during the company’s annual AI developer conference, “Baidu Create 2022,” which was held virtually in its own metaverse app.

Li, spoke about Baidu’s strategy for promoting growth that is both healthy and sustainable in his speech titled “Innovation Drives Growth, Feedback Drives Innovation”.

“Deep learning algorithms have set the cornerstone for the fourth technological revolution,” Li explained.

“Technology innovation is not something you can create behind closed doors.” “Rather, innovation comes from listening and improving based on real-world user feedback,” said Li.

Google’s Bard already here

One of the leaders of the tech industry, Google, has announced its own conversational AI and a potential competitor to ChatGPT called Bard.

Google’s Bard is the search giant’s response to Microsoft-funded ChatGPT. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, announced the new project in a blog post, which is in the experimental phase and limited to “trusted testers.”

“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses,” Pichai wrote.

The power behind Bard is LaMDA, which stands for Language Model for Dialogue Applications. LaMDA has been deemed a promising technology, even though Google engineer Blake Lemoine, who claimed to have achieved sentience with it, was suspended from his position.

“Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills,” Pichai wrote.

With its remarkable success, ChatGPT’s growth has sparked increased interest and investment in the field of generative AI technology.
