Elon Musk Drops Hint of ChatGPT Rival ‘BasedAI’

Elon Musk Drops Hint of ChatGPT Rival 'BasedAI'

Elon Musk has reportedly approached AI experts in recent weeks to form a team for building a chatbot like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, reports Independent.

The tech billionaire has even hired AI researcher Igor Babuschkin, a specialist in developing machine-learning models that power companies like ChatGPT, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The Twitter boss has been dropping hints with continuous tweets stating “BasedAI.”

AI-powered chatbots have been a growing trend since the successful launch of ChatGPT by OpenAI last November. ChatGPT has set the benchmark for the AI chatbot era, with multiple industry leaders embracing it.

Microsoft has already incorporated ChatGPT into Bing, Alphabet’s Google has announced a similar product called Bard, Alibaba and Baidu are developing their own chatbots, and the Opera browser is planning to integrate ChatGPT into its search.

Additionally, Facebook parent company Meta is launching a new AI-based, large-language model focused on research and community use.

Reiteration of ‘BasedAI’

Musk used the phrase “based AI” for the first time on February 19 in response to an AP news article about Microsoft’s ChatGPT-powered Bing.

As on other occasions, Musk simply tweeted “BasedAI.” The comment was posted while numerous news sources touted the possibility of his building a ChatGPT rival.

The billionaire, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left the project in 2018, warned about the risks of the technology last month while addressing an audience at the World Government Summit.

“We are not far from dangerously strong AI,” he said.

When Microsoft announced the incorporation of ChatGPT into Bing’s search engine, the world’s richest person immediately hinted at bringing a similar product to market.

“Sounds eerily like the AI in System Shock that goes haywire & kills everyone,” noted Musk. He even suggested that AI systems were humanity’s biggest threat.

“One of the biggest risks to the future of civilization is AI. But AI is both positive or negative – it has great promise, great capability but also, with that comes great danger.”

Musk reclaims richest person title

The Tesla boss has recently reclaimed the position of world’s richest man according to Bloomberg.

Musk was ousted from the top spot by Bernard Arnault, CEO of French luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton last December. Nonetheless, the recent rally of Tesla stock has helped him regain the top spot nearly two months after losing it.

Musk’s net worth was around $187.1 billion as of Monday after the stock market closed, which means Arnaoult is not far behind with $185.3 billion.

Tesla stock plummeted following Musk’s acquisition of Twitter last year, but it began to rise with the new-year.

While Musk currently holds the enviable title of richest person alive, he also holds the record for the biggest fortune ever lost in history.

In late 2022, his net worth declined from approximately $340 billion in November to a mere $137 billion in December. The expression world’s smallest violin comes to mind…
