With no single solution in sight, the tech firm is deploying a blend of machine learning and human expertise to identify and mitigate these risks. This initiative, part of a broader collaboration with the Indian government, was highlighted in the lead-up to the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit.
Google’s multilayered approach to AI misinformation
Google’s strategy encompasses a blend of advanced technology and human expertise to identify and mitigate the risks posed by synthetic media. Google acknowledges that there is no silver bullet to eradicate deep fakes and AI-generated misinformation. Instead, the company is adopting a comprehensive strategy leveraging machine learning algorithms and human reviewers. The summit also serves as a platform for both entities to exchange ideas and develop solid strategies to combat the challenges posed by these advanced technological manipulations.
Enhancing digital trust and transparency
In its quest to foster digital trust, Google has introduced several innovative tools and policies. The integration of its AI-based assistant, Bard, into Google Search is accompanied by the “About this result” feature, providing users with context and sourcing information for search results. This enhancement is critical in enabling users to verify the authenticity of the information they encounter.

Moreover, Google is addressing the challenge posed by AI-generated images. The company is rolling out SynthID, a tool that labels such images with metadata and embedded watermarking. YouTube’s revised policies
YouTube, a Google subsidiary, is also reinforcing its stance against manipulated media. A new policy mandates content creators to disclose if their content has been altered or includes synthetic content created using AI tools. This transparency is crucial in ensuring viewers are fully informed about the nature of the content they consume. Additionally, YouTube is revising its misrepresentation policy for Google Ads, prohibiting the use of manipulated media intended to deceive or mislead users.
