Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg has unveiled several ambitious artificial-intelligence projects, describing AI as “the key to unlocking the Metaverse”.

In a live-streamed “Inside the Lab” event on Wednesday, Meta showed off a variety of AI-related projects. Speech-driven VR world-building tools, real-time speech and translation, and a glimpse at its AI supercomputer were among the revelations.

Meta also announced a plan to build a universal speech translator.

“Being able to converse with anyone in any language is a superpower that has been wished for for a long time,” he added.

Builder Bot is an AI technology that allows users to describe 3D-generated pieces of virtual reality worlds to a voice assistant and have them built. With voice instructions, Zuckerberg created a simulated beach, complete with clouds, ships, and a musical soundtrack.

Mr Zuckerberg said Builder Bot was part of Meta’s CAIRaoke project. Which aimed to develop AI helpers by allowing “AI to perceive the world from our perspective” as individuals entered virtual reality via headsets or glasses.

He also claimed that the AI algorithms that run Meta’s virtual worlds will respect privacy, be transparent, and accountable.

Meta also demonstrated a universal language AI translator, presumably to assist metaverse users converse more effectively in various languages. “The capacity to speak with everyone in any language has long been a superpower,” Zuckerberg added.

When finished in mid-2022, the AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) will be among the world’s fastest AI supercomputers. Meta’s computer will create artificial intelligence models for the metaverse. Learning from trillions of examples and working in hundreds of languages.

Facebook has been investing in AI for the past 10 years

It revealed in January that it has begun work on a new AI supercomputer that, when completed in mid-2022, will be the fastest in the world.

Following accusations from whistleblower Frances Haugen, Facebook changed its company name to Meta in October.

Mr Zuckerberg spoke at the time of a vast Metaverse accessible via virtual reality headgear like the Meta Quest, previously Oculus, where people could work, play, and converse. Meta also intends to engage 10,000 workers across Europe to assist in the construction.
