Meta leads competitors into VR

One of the most useful but lesser-known features of Meta’s Quest 2 virtual reality (VR) headset is its ability to track the physical exertion of the user across various apps. Meta is now using the Apple Health fitness data aggregator platform to link its fitness software to the world of Apple mobile devices, including the Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad.

Oculus Move app lets the user set daily calorie burning that appear in view on the Quest 2 headset

The Oculus Move app allows users set daily calorie burning and activity objectives that appear in view on the Quest 2 headset when using VR apps, similar to the Apple Watch Activity app, which provides the user a constantly updated display of their movement statistics on mobile devices.

Users will have to opt-in before their data is shared. After the Oculus Move data is exchanged with Apple Health, the statistics will be saved on Meta’s servers utilizing end-to-end encryption. “We don’t utilize your Oculus Move metrics to inform the advertising you see on any Meta services,” Meta adds for those concerned about privacy.

Meta’s data sharing initiative is a peek at Apple’s immersive internet future

This is one of Meta’s first big initiatives, proving Mark Zuckerberg’s oft-stated vow that the company’s metaverse activities will remain open and compatible with competitors. The change is particularly important since it marks Apple’s first direct tie to the virtual reality side of the metaverse, although in a passive way, given that the Meta Quest will bleed into the Apple ecosystem next month.

A lot of trustworthy analyst reports have suggested that an Apple immersive computing gadget would be released soon. It’s unknown if the gadget will be augmented reality (AR) smart glasses, a virtual reality (VR) headset, or a hybrid of the two. However, industry reports suggest a delivery date of late 2022 or early 2023.

Meta and other VR platforms may soon have major competition from Cupertino

According to a recent increase in recruiting for Apple’s AR and VR efforts, Meta and other VR platforms may soon face significant competition from Cupertino. Meanwhile, this collaboration between two of the most popular digital platforms will provide us a glimpse of at least one way the metaverse will accompany us everywhere we go.
