Google also declared its “independence from semiconductors”


Google announced on the 2nd (local time) that it would make its own smartphone semiconductor called “Google Tensor”. The company is splitting from Qualcomm. It has designed its own silicon chip using ARM technology.

Starting with Apple, major technology companies are creating their own semiconductor designs. Qualcomm and Intel, which once dominated the smartphone semiconductor market, are losing influence.

CNBC reports that Google announced on the 2nd (local time) that it would make its own smartphone semiconductor called “Google Tensor” and use that instead of Qualcomm’s in its new Pixel 6 smartphone.

Apple also declared its semiconductor independence earlier this year. New semiconductors based on the technology of British semiconductor design company ARM are now installed in Apple’s iPhones and Mac computers instead of Intel’s. They are produced by the Taiwanese foundry company TSMC. Thus, Apple has become TSMC’s largest customer and has a voice in semiconductor procurement.

For battery-powered mobile devices, ARM’s semiconductors consume less power. Thus, they can be used in a wide range of mobile devices, including smartphones, tablet PCs, and laptops.

Google Tensor is expected to help drive down the price of its new flagship smartphones, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which will be released in October. To expand market share for Pixel phones, Google has increased performance while lowering pricing in recent years. With lower-priced high-end smartphones, it plans to erode Apple’s and Samsung Electronics’ market share. Tensor is similar to the Tensor processing unit that Google currently uses for cloud computing. Single-chip semiconductor systems (SoCs) consist of a system fully contained within a semiconductor.

The Google Tensor Semiconductor will enhance photo and image processing, translation, and text-to-speech functions of smartphones.

Google Tensor includes a central processing unit (CPU), a graphics processing unit (GPU), and an image signal processing unit to drive artificial intelligence (AI). The company noted that Google Tensor can be installed on a smartphone to process more data instead of sending it to the cloud.

During an interview with CNBC, Google’s head of hardware division, Rick Osterlono, stated, “The problem with the Pixel is that it was only limited by existing technology.”.

In his words, the new semiconductor will make Google’s smartphones perform better.
